Treatment for Codependency
When are you in need of codependency recovery? Codependency is identified as a personality disorder in which a person relies solely on other people for assurance and a sense of identity. It is highly associated with environmental factors and is often the result of living with a dysfunctional family in which one of the members demonstrates symptoms of codependency. Codependent people approach others and desperately try to gain their approval and affection; they then begin to subconsciously control them through their dependent style.
For a codependent person, approval is more important than respect and thus they often sacrifice their comfort and needs in exchange for it. He or she derives their sense of purpose from the satisfaction of other people, especially a partner. Codependency can occur in all types of relationships like family, work, friends, or romantic relations. In a romantic relationship, the codependent person plays the role of the rescuer.
They attempt to please and take care of the other person and often thrive on their flaws and poor functionalities. The dynamics of a codependent relationship tend to be dysfunctional and are characterized by intimacy issues, communications issues, controlling behavior, manipulation, boundary problems, and extreme dependency. These dynamics create an imbalance in which a person is abusive or allows the other person's harmful behavior (addiction, low achievements, poor health...)
Symptoms of codependency include intense and unstable interpersonal relationships, feelings of distress when alone, chronic feelings of boredom and emptiness, Disregard for one's needs in favor of those of other people, a constant and strong desire for acceptance and affection, external referencing, dishonesty and denial, lack of trust, low self-worth, and self-victimizing.
