What is Insomnia?
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine defines insomnia as “persistent difficulty with sleep initiation, duration, consolidation or quality.” It is having incredible difficulties when trying to sleep and the inability to fall asleep. However, Co-morbid Insomnia is when insomnia co-exists with another medical or psychiatric condition. In that case, insomnia hinders the treatment. Having depression with insomnia, for example, makes the case worse.
Signs and Causes for Insomnia
According to the National Health Services, people with insomnia:
- Find it hard to go back to sleep
- Wake up several times during the night
- Lie awake at night
- Feel tired even if they sleep and then during the day
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institution reports that the main causes have to do with depression, stress, changes, and unhealthy lifestyle. You might also have a higher risk with age, genetics, and environment. Insomnia can occur at any age, but the older you are, the higher the chances.
Dangers of Insomnia
Insomnia is often accompanied by tiredness and loneliness. It might feel like a refuge; lying awake alone when the world is quiet might seem inviting at first. However, the body and mind soon start to feel incredibly drained.
Since sleep is when the body recharges, lack of sleep will obviously make you incredibly tired and thus more prone to accidents according to University at Buffalo. Problems with memory and making errors will become more recurring as insomnia develops.
Highlighting the dangers of sleep deprivation on the heart, the American Heart Association links sleep with health problems. Lack of sleep can lead to strokes, obesity, and Alzheimer’s disease. A study done by the National Center for Biotechnology Information confirms that even one night of sleep deprivation can contribute to memory issues.
Thus, sleep is vital to the continuation of a healthy life. Trying to treat insomnia with drugs or alcohol will just have a snowball effect on health. Harvard Health warns against that and delves into the risks of developing a dangerous cycle of abuse.
