Alcoholic Husband, Alcoholic Wife, Alcoholic Mother, Alcoholic Father, Alcoholic Son, Alcoholic Daughter or an Alcoholic Friend?

Sharing a life with someone else can lead to an incredible journey. A partner can be a source of happiness and love when you’re both on the same page, reading the same book. A relationship allows you to head together down the same path. Sometimes that path is a rocky road, filled with bumps and obstacles that seem to be there to test the strength of the relationship. Alcoholism, being one of the many dangerous addictions, is one of the many hardships a couple can go through.

“We can learn to use the pain in our relationships to transform us thereby turning them into entities which heal not harm.” ―Donna Goddard

Göre National Survey on Drug Use and Health, alcoholism is not only among adults. In fact, 24.5% of people aged 12 and above binge drink regularly.

So what are the causes? How can we spot alcoholism and what to do?

Causes of an Alcoholic Partner

Since human beings are all unique, causes for alcohol addiction vary from person to person and someone’s experience is not universal.  The Amerikan Bağımlılık Merkezleri clarifies that the exact reasons are not always understood and that many factors come into play such as madde bağımlılığı

The Alcohol Rehab Organization split some of the most common causes into four categories:

  1. Biological Factors: genetics and physiology play an important part in this repetitive behavior. Some people can stop consuming alcohol at a certain time, while others feel the urge to keep going
  2. Environmental Factors: the place where we grew up, income, and access to alcohol
  3. Social factors:  jobs, family, and friends that surround us and their influence on our choices
  4. Psychological factors: what we’re dealing with previously, such as kaygı, depresyon, stres, TSSB

Dahası, Ulusal Alkol Suistimali ve Alkolizm Enstitüsü explains that people who turn to alcohol have certain expectations and hopes of benefiting from drinking. When their expectations are not met, they tend to up their drinking frequency instead of stopping at once.

Signs and Symptoms of Alcoholic Family Member

Since you’re close to your partner even if you aren’t living together, spotting signs of alcoholism is a tad easier than with a friend or an acquaintance. The Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services explains that you need to be on the lookout for high tolerance and withdrawal signs. High tolerance can be spotted when a person can drink excessively without getting drunk immediately. Attempts at hiding the fact that they’re drinking will be definitely made as well as avoidance of confrontation when asked. The withdrawal comes in many forms, but mainly: anxiety or jumpiness, trembling, sweating, and nausea.

Risks of Being an Alcoholic

The Ulusal Sağlık Hizmetleri warns against multiple risks. Since alcohol affects consciousness, it might lead to unexpected dangers that the person won’t be able to stop. In the longer term, alcohol may lead to problems with the bağışıklık sistemi, making the body susceptible to greater diseases; heart diseases, liver cancer…

And since it’s a vicious cycle, alcohol will lead to other issues. Sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders may arise with your partner. This is why an intervention may help direct them towards the right path.

Dos and Don’ts

Alcoholism is a dark spiral of hurdles. Staying strong and looking out for others is an incredibly taxing choice to make which is why in a study made by the US National Library of Medicine partners of alcoholic people were either engaged, tolerant or withdrawn. The study explored 30 different cases and the coping mechanisms used. They suggest that effective intervention methods are crucial to reducing suffering.

Al-Anon Organization recommends maintaining a calm environment and always taking care of yourself. All the hardships will often make you forget about your own needs. Taking a step back and attending support meetings will help you with staying hopeful and on track.

In short, DO:

  • Seek outside help in order to maintain your own good health; mental and physical
  • Try to maintain normal routines so you can  have a sense of normality
  • Research more on the matter and understand what’s truly going on
  • Lookup addiction centers around you

DON’T:

  • Don’t rush into solving the issue as soon as you notice it. Addiction needs time and patience
  • Don’t be judgmental or shout at your partner. Creating more trouble will likely drain you both
  • Don’t focus on their addiction to the point it becomes your only concern
  • Don’t give up. It’s a long path, but you’re never alone

You’re never alone; reaching out for help is one of the first steps to take. The AAFP encourages you to seek out someone you trust or a therapist so you can get the support you deserve.
