We live in a digital age. The days when work was confined to an office space or address are long gone. Now, we can access work in the form of our cell phones and laptops, twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. The boundary between work and life has never been more blurred. The majority of the world now works from home, or within a hybrid model, making it almost impossible to turn off.

If we don’t set boundaries in place in our day to day, the two can easily become one. Remember: we are not our jobs. Our jobs change, transition, and evolve all the time – it’s important to not attach your Being to something outside your control. To help you navigate the complexities of this modern world, we’ve compiled a list of practical tips from our Founder and CEO Abdullah Boulad to help you stop sacrificing your health and happiness for career success.

Your health is the foundation for all professional success and fulfilment. It is easier than ever to get blinded by money and material pursuits, but we remind you that without your health – none of this means anything. What is the point of luxury if you’re not able to physically or mentally enjoy it? What we do to take care of our health is not to be dealt with in our “off hours.” It’s a constant, and something that should be seamlessly integrated into our work day. The three absolutes with our health are good physical activity, balanced eating habits, and strong sleeping patterns. When these three are in check, so are we. This doesn’t need to be scheduled around working hours, but can actually be part of our every day.

Our CEO, Abdullah Boulad reminds us: “We were never meant to be sitting at desks, hunching over laptops and papers.” An easy addition to your work life is changing how sedentary you are throughout the day. Our CEO recommends small fixes like a standing desk, or using an exercise ball as a chair. “If you have a meeting, make it mobile meeting. Walking is a great way to tap into your problem solving skills and boost creativity,” he suggests. Find little ways to integrate your health into your work day. This will help you not resent work as something that prevents you from being healthy. Instead, use it as a catalyst to achieve a healthier life.

It is easier than ever to jump out of bed and immediately be online. We recommend having at least two hours in the morning before you check emails, texts or notifications. When we check our tech first thing in the morning, we spike our cortisol levels and make it very hard to find a natural rhythm throughout the day. This makes it more likely that we will crash by the afternoon, and rely on stimulants like coffee or energy drinks to pick up the slack. A good morning routine looks different for each person, but limiting technology time in the first and last two hours of the day can make all the difference.

If you want to take this a step further, get a real alarm clock in your room – don’t use your phone! Even better: leave your phone in a different room. Allow your body to wake up naturally, and take a step outside before you go right into the digital world. “We tend to take sunlight for granted. But the simple act of standing upon waking reinforces your natural circadian rhythm to be awake during daytime and asleep during the night,” says Boulad. Pro tip: start your day on paper. Write down the six most important tasks for the day, and cross them off when you achieve them. 

Where we work is just as important as how we work. Our environments set the tone for our state of mind – that’s why we recommend keeping work and home separate. Our brains are very smart – our subconscious always knows where we are. If we go to work, it goes into work mode. When we come home, it relaxes. When we have no spacial boundary for our brain – we can easily fall into the trap of never turning off. This can lead to thinking about work all day, every day – it can even appear in our dreams. Our CEO notes that where we rest is a sacred space: “make your room a space for sleeping and intimate relations – keep work outside! Make your space dark and quiet to allow your body to seamlessly transition to sleep mode.” These tips may seem obvious, but it’s never been more difficult to set them in place. Doing the little things to separate your work and home spaces, will allow your brain to more seamlessly transition between the two.

Remember, you are not your job. If you make your work your identity, you set yourself up for distress if and when that job goes away or changes. We are constantly evolving. If we attach to things, we allow them to control us. The boundary between work and home has never been more blurry – this puts more responsibility on us as individuals to set ourselves up for success. But by bringing mindful techniques into our day to day when it comes to technology, space, and our own health and wellness – we make work a more enjoyable part of life.
